The U.S. has lost almost 40,000 jobs due to the Zika virus, report says

NEW YORK — U.S.-based financial services giant Genesis Logistics is reporting that nearly 40,500 jobs have been lost due to a global outbreak of the Zika Virus, and the company is expecting an additional 18,000 to 22,000 employees to be impacted.

In the U.K., Genesis Logistic reported that more than 10,000 people are at risk for contracting Zika virus in the region, while in Germany the company expects that number to increase to about 20,000.

The company has also told investors it expects to see the number of Zika virus infections grow in the coming months, with about 15,000 infections in Europe and 12,000 in the U.

“The company said that while it continues to have no confirmed cases in the United States, it expects the country to become a hub for the virus when the epidemic is fully contained.

At the same time, the company has been tracking its own virus data, and said that it expects its workforce to decline by 1.3 percent to 2.3 million as of March 28, 2017.
